this + that :: i miss the weekend
Posted: October 15, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 2 Comments »Why can’t weekends be loooooonger? Time just flies way to fast for me to even catch up! I’ve been so occupied and exhausted from work that I’ve finally started showing signs of “losing it”. My definition of losing it involves forgetting the days and showing up to appointments that don’t even start till the next day, le sigh I’m a whiner today :)
Anyhoo, I hope you guys had a wonderful Monday!
Check out my little photo diary of the past week…
Ahhh my first hot chocolate of the season!
I’ve been trying and making the effort to eat healthy at lunch because from Mon-Fri from 8am-5pm, I am stuck sitting in a chair! So the majority of my lunches have been nothing much just good old healthy fruits (strawberries, grapes), veggies (carrots), and half a PB+J sandwich!
this + that :: it’s finally starting to feel like Fall

I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend! Are you ready for the new week to start? I’m a little excited/bummed that the weekend was so short! I survived my first week of work and an 8-5 schedule Now that I’m working, I wake up shouting “TGIFriday!!” on Friday mornings and try to be as productive as I can be on the weekends. So far, productive is defined as stay in bed all day and catch up on all my favorites shows on Hulu :)
Here’s a photo recap of my week…
My parents were on a mission to fatten me up prior to the start of work! I’m going to miss our impromptu midday lunches and shopping sprees…
National Taco Day
Posted: October 4, 2012 Filed under: babble | Tags: food, tacos, taco man, food holiday, national taco day 8 Comments »I hop onto Facebook and I find out it’s National Taco Day and tacos are like only one of my favorite foods ever! Good thing I had tacos today!
At work there is a taco truck that comes by everyday at 10:30am. For the last few days, I’ve seen lots of people rush out to wait in line for the taco man, and yesterday I missed him! But today, I officially introduced myself to him! Mr. Taco Man himself personally came up to me to ask me what I wanted to order, but only because the two ladies working inside the food truck didn’t understand what I was saying and I had to have co-worker order for me…. Hmmm ULTIMATE food truck fail LOL!
Anyhoo, his tacos are delicious and definitely hit the spot and it’s also a great little pick-me-up treat at work. I ordered the carne asada taco and tacos de papa (potato taco). Carne asada, good! It was my first time trying a tacos de papa and it’s interesting! I’m sure there are variations on how they’re made, but my taco tasted like a deep-fried hash brown taco.
I think I’m falling in love with my Mr. Taco Man! He also serves hot dogs!!! :)
I hope you guys are having a wonderful week! First week of work is almost done and so far I’m enjoying it.
I miss you guys!

Eating Adventure :: The Yum Festival 2012
Posted: September 30, 2012 Filed under: eating adventure | Tags: Bacon, food, food trucks, lobster, ontario, ontario mills, yum festival 3 Comments »Disclaimer: This will be an obnoxiously long food porn heavy post. Very few words, just pictures. Drool at your own risk :)
This weekend was my very last weekend as a post-grad bum (my first day of work is this Monday!!!) and what better way than to celebrate than go to a food truck festival, right???!!!
I went to the 2nd Annual Yum Festival in Ontario Mills (Ontario, California). What is The Yum Festival? Well, it’s foodie heaven featuring some of Southern California’s best gourmet food trucks. This year the festival featured Food Network’s “The Great Food Race” Season 2 winner The Lime Truck, as well Bacon MANia, The Grilled Cheese Truck, CoolHaus, and a slew of other popular food trucks.
Anyhoo, on to the pictures! We got there when it opened so there weren’t a lot of people, just exited foodies!
My inner pudgy girl was giddy with joy :D
Here were just some of the food trucks…

The menu…I was really looking forward to this food truck but passed. What?! Me, pass on bacon? Say it isn’t so lol :)

The Grilled Cheese Truck. Long lines for this truck! I looked at the menu and was not interested in eating a melt. What’s the hype with this food truck?
For entertainment, there was a DJ and a BMX stunt show by Team Soil…
Now on to what we ate!! We only hit up 4 food trucks but by the second I was already feeling full! Food festival fail.
He was super excited for the Lobsta Truck. It’s one of the pricier trucks, but it’s so worth it because they don’t skimp on anything! This truck definitely did not disappoint! We had the lobsta roll with butter, it was sooooo good and packed with lots of lobster. I love that they don’t use the traditional bread rolls, but instead opt for toast. We also got a cup of the clam chowder which was also amazing, and we sipped on a refreshing cup of lemonade.
For our second tasting, we decided on tacos! There were two tacos trucks there, The Surfer Taco (fish tacos) and Gringos Tacos but I love me my Mexican tacos so we went with Gringos! We feasted on the 3 taco plate special which included three carne asada tacos, rice, and beans. The tacos were good and reminiscent of my beloved taco man :)
Did I mention that there was a fried chicken truck?? I love fried chicken and how could I go to a food festival without eating at least one piece of chicken? Ludo Truck was our last (last but not least) stops! We went for the honey garlic-glazed wings…very sticky, very gooey, very messy, very good. Although I love fried chicken, I don’t think they sweet, sticky, gooey, messy wings were right for this occasion. PS, so happy it was one of our last stops because my hands were so sticky!
And lastly, cupcakes!!! I was very pleased to see that there was a cupcake truck! Of course, I wanted to run straight for the cupcake truck when we got there, but my more reasonable conscience (ahem, boyfriend) convinced me that cupcakes were going to spoil my appetite. Don’t let him know this but between you and me, he was right lol. I picked up two cupcakes, the Southern Red Velvet and a Snickerdoodle Cupcake from My Delight Cupcakery.
Check out some of my favorite food trucks for their Twitter feed and schedule:
- Lobsta Truck
- Gringos Tacos
- Ludo Truck
- My Delight Cupcakery
- IE Food Truck Fest (up to date info on upcoming IE Food Truck Festival coming October 20, AHHHHHHH!)
Things I learned…
- bring a Longchamp purse, not your vintage light-colored leather purse that you will fuss over (throughout the event, tables start getting dirty and people with messy sticky fingers are walking around, and what girl doesn’t love big bags :)
- bring a minimum of 2 bottles of water (one for me and one for boyfriend ;)
- hand sanitizer is a MUST.
- sandals equal tan lines in 90° weather
- you will spend more money on drinks than food (it’s a fact)
- eat light meals throughout the week to prep tummy for food festival :)
I had a wonderful time and tons of great laughs at my first food festival! It was a good weekend and I’m currently nursing a tummy ache, thank you Mister for a fabulous date :)
What’s your favorite food truck? I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

Eating Adventure :: Laodong Beef Noodles in Rowland Heights, CA
Posted: September 26, 2012 Filed under: eating adventure | Tags: Anthony Bourdain, beef noodles, Dumpling, eating adventure, food, laodong beef noodles, restaurant review, review, rowland heights, scallion pancake 3 Comments »On our way home, we made a quick grocery stop at one of those Asian markets to stock up on noodles (you all know by now how much I love me my ramen noodles! :) As we were entering the grocery store, I noticed that there was this tiny restaurant that specializes in noodles/dumplings and they had an open view of the kitchen and my inner 4-year old goes “Oooh this might be a good place to eat noodles”.
After grocery shopping, we headed into Laodong Beef Noodles (in Rowland Heights, CA). I love noodles. I especially love beef noodles from these Taiwanese/Chinese places. I don’t necessarily eat the beef (never touch it), but I do chow down on the noodles like there’s no tomorrow. Which sorta leads me back to my first point, I love noodles! Hehe :)
My criteria for what makes this place a “must go again” to a “ewww never again!” is the same for all noodles/dumpling places. I actually judge on 3 simple and classic dishes. Hmmm I was planning on saying writing something super witty and Anthony Bourdain-esque but the words are just not coming out. Well, if you’ve watched his “Shanghai” episode then you know that he orders these three particular dishes… the soup dumpling, beef noodles, and scallion pancake (I can’t remember if he eats this or not but I love these pancakes!).
First up, we have the soup dumpling! The soup dumpling is a steamed pork dumpling. If you’ve never had a soup dumpling before, I feel like a must warn you. At first bite, the natural juices from inside the dumpling will just ooze out and it’s hot… well, this is only true for good dumpling places or if you’re just eating randomly eating dumplings in Shanghai one day lol. (Note to self: put eating dumplings in Shanghai on bucket list). Sadly, this wasn’t necessary the case with the soup dumplings here at Laodong Beef Noodles. They weren’t really juicy and had a strange sour taste to the meat. Ughh, I hope I didn’t eat expired meat!!
Next up, the scallion pancake! Scallion pancakes are awesome! I actually have a recipe that I need to post soon!! Unlike a true pancake, this is made with dough rather than batter. There are variations but the most basic filling are scallions (aka green onions). A good scallion pancake, has a good dough to scallion ratio and is crispy. The scallion pancake I had here, was…well, they didn’t skimp on the green onions! They were extra generous because the whole thing was filled with green onions which resulted in a slightly mushy scallion pancake.
And now, the best for last…beef noodles! On the menu, it’s called Champion Beef Noodle in Clear Soup. The noodles were very yummy!!! Aside from that, there was nothing very “champion” like about these noodles. For the price ($6.99). I felt like I was being ripped off because they served it in a gigantic bowl but it was only filled halfway so that was misleading and disappointing. And there was hardly any hearty chunks of beef with the noodles. Now, I know I said I don’t eat the beef but I usually share with my dad and eat half (half always because I’m weird and like to eat half of everything lol), but there weren’t a lot of noodles anyways! He was disappointed too! He didn’t favor the broth, but I thought it was okay. And he made a very valid point, for $6.99 we could have just gone to the grocery store next door and buy the noodles ourselves (since that’s what I really like to eat anyways) and I’m sure that’s what they did.
Yelp gives Laodong Beef Noodles a 2.5 out of 5 stars. Read Yelp review here. I agree (and I’m only being generous with that extra 0.5 stars lol). If you know of any great dumpling places/beef noodle places in the LA-area, please let me know because I’m always on the hunt for a new one! The one I really like at the moment, is really dirty. Sigh, why do all the dirty places have to be so good??
Until the next eating adventure! xoxo, kat
Laodong Beef Noodles 1015 S Nogales St, Suite 130 Rowland Heights, CA 91748why hello, Fall!!
Posted: September 23, 2012 Filed under: babble | Tags: fall 12 Comments »It’s the second official day of Autumn and it still feels like summer here in sunny (but extremely) hot California! Won’t this heatwave ever go away?? Can’t a girl just wear her new sweaters, scarves, and boots already? :)
For the first day of Fall, I celebrated with my first cup of Pumpkin Spiced Latte from Starbucks and went to a bbq/belated birthday party that my boyfriend’s family was throwing. He calls it bbq, I call it belated birthday party because there was a lot food (omg meat galore for an “occasional vegetarian” like myself ;), tons of cake and desserts (mmmm flan!), and presents! I definitely had a great time, and it was a great way to end summer and to kick off the new season!
I hope you had a wonderful first day of the new season and great weekend! How did you celebrate?
