it’s the 100th post!! what better way to celebrate than with a Liebster Blog Award!

Ahhh finally, the 100th post! Wow, I couldn’t have gotten here without all of you! Since it is the big 100, I guess by default this post needs to be extra special right? :)

Well two Fridays ago, I mentioned that I was awarded with the Liebster Blog Award. The beautiful lady behind Around the World in Eighty Bakes nominated me for the award. What made it even more sweet was that I received the nom on National Chocolate Cupcake Day. I was on cloud nine that day, I felt like Tuesday was made for me. I was that excited…everything just fell right into place.

Sure, it probably doesn’t mean much to some but for a girl that’s only been blogging for almost 5 months now…it means the world to me.  When I started blogging I never even dreamed of things like this happening for me or my blog.

I feel like this is the only appropriate time in my life where I am allowed to give a cheesy thank you speech, so please bear with me because I’m going to me the biggest cheeseball there is right now! Hahah. It’ll only be for a second, I promise :)

To the “he” in she cooks, he eats thank you for all your encouragement and support not only with the blog but with everything that I do. I can’t imagine being with anyone else other than you, here’s to the next 100 years and the many anniversaries and date nights to come! I love you. Oh ps. thanks for the kitchen! :)

And to those few readers that I know on a first name basis…your comments, advice, and emails make me happy. Just happy. I can’t explain it. Trish and aikidude (has the ban been lifted? lol), thank you for being there since the beginning.

I know, I’m a cheeseball! :)

Prior to this, I had no idea what this award meant and after lots of googling, here’s some background on the award:

“The Liebster Blog Award is given to recognize your up and coming bloggers who you feel deserve more. It’s a way to connect with new people and expand your horizons. This is an award this is received and  also given.”

Here are the rules:

  1. Thank the giver and link back to the blogger who gave it to you.
  2. Reveal your top 5 bloggers and let them know by leaving a comment on their blog.
  3. Copy and paste the award on your blog.
As my way of saying thanks, I am very happy to nominate the following blogs:
  •  Sunny Side Up   A wonderful mom to the cutest baby girl around. During my first month of blogging, she was so sweet and asked me to guest blog. That was truly a wonderful experience.
  • Dreaming of…Asia   Oh, just a European man obsessed with aikido living in China eating all the amazing foods I would like to try one day.
  • iliketotalkalot   A total sweetheart with the cutest nails around and a polish collection I envy!
  • El fogoncito   He makes the most crazy delicious food on the net!
  • EyeWonTell A fashionista!!
Special thanks again to Around the World in Eighty Bakes! Please check out her blog, she is quite the baker!! Her blog is filled with yummy drool-worthy sweets and treats!

Thank you for reading she cooks, he eats. It means the world to me! Hope you enjoy the next babble or the occasional recipe or two! :)

love, kat

Another week down, only 3 more weeks to Halloween! Is anyone else bummed that All Hallow’s Eve falls on a Monday…? Geez Monday, you’re already a bummer but thanks for also being a buzz kill too :)

Speaking of Halloween, there are a few things I haven’t done yet…like a pumpkin carve, purchase copious amounts of candy, make my own Halloween themed sugary confections, and watch “Hocus Pocus” (you can watch it in parts here on Youtube). Oh my, I’m way behind this year!

As usual, this week went by so fast! Here are some of my faves from the week…

i’m 4 months today!

Oh my goodness, I can’t believe I didn’t know this until now but I am officially 4 months old today! What a milestone! I never, in a million years, thought I would be blogging!

A friend once asked me, why is this blogging thing so important to me… at first, I didn’t really have an answer but now I can genuinely say that this blog is important to me because it is a reflection of me and everything in my life. Since I started to learn how to cook, I have always wanted to share with people my cooking experiences, frustrations, success, and failures. In no way am I on my way to being an expert, but I truly enjoy learning and talking about anything food related.

Thank you to anyone that has ever stopped by she cooks, he eats and for taking the time to read my crazy babbles, yummy date night recipes, and anything and everything in between.

I’ve had such a great time meeting and interacting with people here on WordPress, and I hope to continue our blog-friendship (even if your country banned you hehe :).

Hope everyone is ready to kick off the weekend!

many x’s and o’s

make-your-own-pizza anniversary special

Remember when my boyfriend texted me a pic of pizza dough and how excited I was for a make-your-own-pizza date night??

Well, it finally happened this week! For our twenty-something-odd month anniversary, he wanted us to make something together so he suggested pizza. You bet I was excited when he mentioned that! :)

Check out our fun anniversary date night below…

the usual list of pizza ingredients :)

we used rosemary focaccia dough from Fresh And Easy

For our make-your-own-pizza, there were only 2 requirements….he had to have meat, and I had to have some sort of veggie.

gentleman's choice: pepperoni and Calabrese-style salami

lady's choice: broccoli, white button mushrooms, grape tomatoes (I apologize for the word "ass" on the can. that is my boyfriend's can of whoop ass...when I beat him at sudoku, I make him open my cans because every time we go shopping we always forget to buy a can opener haha)

Making your own pizzas is great because you can use up ingredients that have been hogging up precious fridge space…

cheese: havarti, muenster, parmesan (who knew there were so many different types of cheese just lying in the fridge?) PS. In no way am I a cheese connoisseur, so this may be a strange combo for some, but melted cheese mixed in with yummy tomato sauce all taste the same to me :)

Since I made whole wheat spaghetti caprese and Marcella Hazan’s Tomato and Butter Sauce with Onions in the past  and discovered how amazingly simple and easy making your own sauce was, I vowed to never buy any kind of red sauce from the grocery store again! I guess that vow included pizza sauce too (non-recipe recipe below…sorry, I never measure! But I have guesstimates :)

Kat's pizza sauce in the making! just canned tomatoes, garlic, oregano, fresh basil, red pepper flakes, s+p

While the sauce simmered, I chopped up all of the ingredients (even the onion! :) and tried my best at plating like my idol (I love how freakishly neat she is).

I must admit, I munched on a few slices of pepperoni and salami (very yummy!)

The pizza was assembled in this fashion… slices of muenster/havarti cheese, top with sauce, sprinkled parmesan cheese, place toppings. To bake the pizza, we used our Williams-Sonoma cake pan which turned out pretty good.

i love square-shaped pizzas (maybe for Valentine's, I'll make mini-heart shaped pizzas)

happy anniversary nom nom nom :)

Although it turned out great and was yummy, I wasn’t extremely satisfied with the crust… Any tips for me when it comes to baking pizza crust in the oven?? I like my crust crunchy! Would it be okay to pre-bake my crust for a few minutes before I add all the toppings? If so, how long? Sigh… I need help!! :(

What do you guys like to do for anniversaries? Do you prefer to stay in? Or get all gussied up and head out? If so, do you go back to where you had your first date? I would love to go to Gordon Ramsey’s Boxwood Cafe at The London West Hollywood for a fancy daytime brunch (we both love Ramsey!). And one place that always brings back happy/funny/awkward memories is Viva Madrid, it’s where we had our first date :)

Till the next monthly anniversary!

xoxo, kat

Thank you for your tremendous amount of support, love, and encouragement. Only 77 years + 6 months to go, thanks for figuring out the math :)

Kat’s Pizza Sauce

serving size: 1 medium pizza

  • 16 oz. can organic tomato sauce
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 5-7 fresh basil leaves, chiffonade
  • 2 tbsp dried organic 0regano (more or less depending on taste)
  • sea salt (to taste)
  • fresh ground pepper (lots of it)
  1. Combine all the ingredients into a saucepan.
  2. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
  3. Simmer for 20 minutes, or until it’s no longer watery in consistency.
  4. Let it cool for a few minutes, then spoon sauce onto pizza dough.

oh my, it’s the 7 links challenge!

This week I was tagged by the lovely Jamie from A Dash of Domestic to participate in an ongoing 7 links challenge within the blogging community. I love her recipes and am obsessed with her garden! The only thing growing in my backyard are spring onions and maybe a guava or two (if those pesky birds haven’t gotten to them yet!).

I was super excited/a bit nervous to participate because…well, I haven’t been blogging for very long and if you haven’t noticed I babble A LOT! Hehe thanks for sticking by me though :)

With fingers crossed, here goes nothing! (ps. click the pics for the post mentioned :)

Most beautiful post…

it would have to be my post remembering the people who were important to us that we lost; this post will always be my most personal (and emo) post... || photo

Most popular post…

according to the stats, my original spaghetti and meatballs post has garnered the most attention so far (over a whopping (at least for me) 300 views)

Most controversial post…

a pic of sexy man hands!! haha jk! originally this recipe was titled "sex in your mouth salsa" but was later changed to "party in your mouth salsa"... i guess that sex in your mouth part is not very PG?

Friday meets Autumn = love

Happy first day of Autumn!!

I’m excited! I love it when the seasons change. Sadly, it’s still super warm here….BOOOO hehe :)

After a wonderful vacation, I’m so happy to be back! It was quite an exhausting day settling in to my new routine, but it was a great day nonetheless. Aside from that, I’m also catching up on my foodie blogs and I’m on the hunt for a new dish, cupcake, or cookie that inspires me. I can’t wait to cook again! I just haven’t found the right recipe yet…. Any suggestions? I’m always up for anything and would love to hear your ideas!

Before I forget, I have some happy news to share!! I got new bakeware to replace my stolen/abused bakeware. We picked up a beautiful cake and brownie pan from Williams-Sonoma the other day, I can’t wait to start baking festive holiday treats! Thank you amazing boyfriend :)

Also, I would like to give a big THANK YOU to Trish! I love reading your comments, and thank you so much for taking the time to read my tiny little blog…it really really does means a lot to me :). And anyone that’s ever visited she cooks, he eats…thank you!! It’s terrifying expressing your thoughts in such a public forum, and I love how supportive everyone on WordPress is!
